Traffic in Chicago Sucks

It’s starting to feel like a conspiracy.  I heard on the radio that the city of Chicago is going to receive a $153 million grant from the Federal government to reduce traffic congestion.  That’s how bad traffic is around Chicago.  The Feds are stepping in, throwing money at the problem.  And what’s the Mayor going to do?  Raise the rates on parking, so people won’t drive their cars into the city, and will be “more inclined” to take public transportation.  Do you think we’ll see Mayor Daley, or any city officials for that matter, taking public transportation?  Noooo, the public pays for their private transportation, as in chauffeured limousines.

Combine that with gas prices - nearly $4 a gallon around here, and you start to wonder.  Pretty soon it’s going to be illegal to even own a car I bet.  Too expensive to park it, too expensive to drive it, too expensive to get insurance … it still pisses me off that the government forces us to endorse a private industry, but that’s another blog.  (Did you know your insurance fees are also based on your credit rating in addition to your driving record?  What the hell does your credit rating have to do with your car insurance?)  If you don’t take your car in for it’s regular “smog check” they take away your license.  In many townships around here you have to purchase a city sticker from the city you live in, and if you don’t have one, you get a ticket.  A city sticker, just for owning a vehicle!  Not to mention annual license plate fees and regular driver’s license fees.

One of the ironies of this is the fact that the CTA bus service (that’s Chicago Transportation Authority for those of you who don’t live around here) has been cutting service.  They’ve eliminated entire routes, and many stops from the routes that still exist.  And raising prices in the meantime.  Less service for more money.  The Chicago way.  Ain’t it grand?  So with less bus service, exactly how does the Mayor expect the CTA to handle his proposed increase in people using public transportation?  It can’t handle the people who already use it!  And many of those can barely afford it as it is because the rates keep going up!  Insanity!

There’s just no good way to get around here without a car.  Period.  And try lugging a dozen bags of groceries and 3 kids on a bus.  Public transportation just isn’t practical for day-to-day living.

Sound off Chicago!  Do you take the bus?  Or just feel like you’ve been run over by one?

You know what else? The MAYOR’S ugly ass doesn’t recognize how unsanitary and disgusting public transportation is. I’ve got a blog post brewing I’m going to call “Public Transportation and the Importance of Personal Hygiene.” I should NOT have to smell you on the train, people. BATHE.

I’m with you love. I’m all for bailin’. We just need a way.

  2. DarcsFalcon Says:

No, no one talks about anything like hygiene. It’s probably not PC to do so.

    Yes, a way. Sigh.

    Love you madly!

  3. DarcKnyt Says:

    Love you too.

Quiet blog comment day for you, huh? I guess no one can relate to our Chicago suckage.

  4. DarcsFalcon Says:

Well, quiet on this post. A couple of others seem to have some activity. I think people can relate - maybe they’re just not home from work yet. Stuck in traffic, or public transportation. ;)

The Peoples’ Republic of Chicago (PRC) can’t control its own problems and needs the Feds to bail them out. The Feds don’t want to and don’t care about Chicago– if I was a Congressmen or Senator (in Illinois or D.C.) I wouldn’t give Chicago a dime, because they spend it all on dumb shit, to put it plainly. All the politicians are at best, full of shit and hypocrites– this includes Father Daley and even the governor Blago– no wonder why the rest of the State hates Chicago. My post, “Chicago Myth #2″ brings this up. There is no conspiracy– just a lack of urban planning due to idiots there.

Also I lived in Chicago the last year without a Car. I can attest that the bus system in Cincinnati is better– they come more frequently and move faster because there is very little traffic here compared to Chicago. Public Transit is a joke there, with exception of maybe the Metra– don’t listen to the Hypocrites, just leave Cook if you live there and the City, unless you have a “gravy train” city job, then stay and be useless- not that all are. Tell Daley he can’t have your business or your taxes– tell him you don’t want to fund the PRC any longer.

JR - “lack of urban planning due to idiots …” ROFL! Oh that’s so true! I’m not in Cook, but even in the suburbs, that lack of planning is evident. Nothing was planned well around here, and even the stuff that was planned, wasn’t carried out effectively. Can you say Palumbo?

Metra’s ok, but not great. I calculated the other day it takes 90 min to go 45 miles. Better than driving into the city I suppose, but still, something about that seems off to me.

Babe: Net speed, 2mph. What’s wrong with that picture? And driving? Even worse. :(

*Sigh* Remember “Rush Hour” in Roanoke?

  10. DarcsFalcon Says:

Love - Actually, it’s less than 45 miles, because I calculated driving distances and the train is generally more “as the crow flies.” So yeah, it’s less than 30 mph.

Yes, I remember rush hour in Roanoke. Not worse than a suburb, as I recall. 100k people.

Ahh, just went to a page on Roanoke and wanted to cry. I miss it so! Please God!

I’m just getting the picture, from the dialog, that the “darc” is a couple . Its good you both realize Chicago isn’t the status quo as far as societies go. Teach your children that society is capable of a lot more with the resources Chicago has. Also don’t let them listen to the radio in Chicago or they will end up like “Mancow” or “Edie and Jobo” with neon lights under their cars and talking about how awesome Chicago is while blasting b96 and driving 355 to go to the Wood field mall for their– instead buy them some records from the 1980s Manchester, UK music scene and tell them how other industrial cities have advanced

  12. DarcsFalcon Says:

JR - Yes, my husband is “Darc” and I am “Ness.” So together we are “DarcNess.” Yes, I know, but it suits us. :)

Absolutely we both realize that Chicago isn’t the status quo. Actually, we both started life on the west coast, and have traveled around the US quite a bit, so we’ve seen a lot of different things, and have a basic idea of where we’d like to go.

Never fear! Our children are being taught that Chicago is not the be-all, end-all! We even refuse to let them use the “Chicago voice” when they speak. “The” is pronounced “the” and not “da.” ;)

Mancow? Gah! NEVER in MY house!
