We have a fun game in our family that we play pretty much any time we want to go someplace. Today we played for nearly 45 minutes.
It’s called “Find The Shoe.”
I don’t know how it happens, but whenever we come home, and tell our kids to put their shoes away in their closet, the next time we need to leave, the shoes don’t seem to be in the closet. This afternoon we hunted high and low for Baby Girl’s missing shoe. She said she’d put it away in the closet last time we got home, but couldn’t find it now. But, she’s 3 so how much can she be believed? We tore the kids room apart. We looked in toy bins, under beds, behind desks, inside boxes, in the laundry hamper, in the bathroom, in our room, in the living room, behind the couch – there was no stone unturned in this place and we just couldn’t find the doggone shoe. And it’s not that big a place!
I was getting hot and sweaty with the effort, getting down on hands and knees to look under things, and I was frustrated. I even went to look in OUR closet, thinking maybe she’d put it next to daddy’s shoes or something. Finally, I flopped down at my desk in exasperation. “I’ve looked EVERYWHERE!” I called to Darc.
“Apparently not everywhere,” he commented sarcastically, walking out of the kids room with missing shoe in hand.
“Where was it?”
“In the closet.”
“No way! I looked in the closet like 5 times!”
“You must not have looked under the big firetruck, because that’s where it was.” Oooh, my husband likes to rub things in! That man! One of these days I’m going to get him good!
I hadn’t actually picked UP the firetruck to look underneath it, but I’d looked IN it, and I’d rolled it back out of the way thinking the shoe might have been behind it, but I never picked it UP. Apparently the last time Baby Girl put the firetruck away, she’d rolled it over her shoe and didn’t realize it. Sigh.
So now her shoes are in the little shoe box where they belong. She was a good girl last time, better than I gave her credit for, because she HAD put her shoes away in the closet. We just weren’t counting on the big red firetruck playing hide and seek with us.
