Is Edgar Hansen the MAN or what?!
If you watch Deadliest Catch, I know you watch After the Catch, because Lord knows we can’t seem to get enough of those guys. And if you watched After the Catch last night, you know what I’m talking about, about Edgar. Was that awesome or what!
For those of you who don’t watch the show, Edgar Hansen is the brother of Sig Hansen, captain of the Northwestern. They’re crab fishermen. While Sig sits up in the wheelhouse, Edgar’s the deck boss, in the rain and freezing temperatures. There’s also another Hansen brother on the boat, Norman, but he almost never appears on camera.
Edgar’s the youngest of the Hansen brothers and seems to be the most stoic. He’s the “cowboy up” type and seems to just take everything in stride, doesn’t have tantrums, doesn’t scream at the other guys. He focuses on getting his work done and the most emotion we seem to see of him is when he’s biting the head off a herring or setting something on fire. “A fisherman’s gotta do what a fisherman’s gotta do” is his motto, and what he said when his last child was born while he was away fishing.
So imagine my surprise when during an After the Catch chat with some of the fishermen’s wives, Edgar stepped out of the shadows dressed in a tux and carrying a rose. His wife – man she’s lovely! – was being asked what it’s like being a fisherman’s wife. Edgar snuck up behind her and someone else gasped so she turned around and caught sight of her husband. Edgar started to say he’d had a speech prepared but that he’d forgotten it, (you could tell he was all choked up,) and then went on to explain to his wife that he wanted to do it right, what hadn’t been done right the first time, and he dropped down to one knee and proposed to her! It was one of the most awesome things I’ve seen on TV and it caught me totally off guard. Edgar? Being all romantic and emotional on national TV? What a trip! And boy does he clean up well!
Those fishermen, always up to something it seems. Whether it’s pranks on other crew members and other boats, or sweeping a lady off her feet – and every other female in America who saw it, they always leave you guessing what’s going to happen next.
Here’s a picture of Edgar and his wife that I found on a fan site (credit goes to Me with Edgar Hansen & his wife)
