Stuck in the Middle

I have a confession.

I’ve fallen in love with a new show.image

Well, okay, it’s not a new show, but it’s new to me.  Actually it’s in its 6th season now, and I just found it a few weeks ago.  It’s Medium.  See, I like to watch Ghost  Whisperer.  That’s my other confession.  It’s a nice bubblegum kind of show, always with the happy ending, pretty Jennifer Love Hewitt.  I swear, I knew when she was just a tiny little thing she’d grow up to be a star.  Ghost Whisperer is to TV what romance novels are to reading.

But CBS acquired Medium this summer after NBC dumped it, and they put it on after Ghost Whisperer and for some reason we decided to watch it when it started this season.  And we got hooked by the writing.  It incredibly well done.  Sure, set aside your disbelief or belief in the subject matter of psychic phenomena, and instead look at the way they do dialogue and backstory.  The way they show family life, siblings dealing with each other, parents trying to cope with children and being out of work and trying to pay bills, struggling with their kids’ teachers.  We’ve been catching up with the show for a few weeks now since it’s syndicated on some other channel, and we haven’t been disappointed yet.  Rarely happy endings, but satisfying ones.  Not too large, not too small, just right.

The other show I’ve taken a shine to – for many of the same reasons as Medium – is The Good Wife.  Great writing, good acting, well done scripts.  Always entertaining.  Just a touch on the “she always wins her cases” but they build up the tension fairly well.  Add in a mother-in-law you want to strangle and hey, it’s a win-win.  :)

Those are my new favorites.  How about you?  Found anything new to love lately?

    Ghost Whisperer? HA! Medium? HAHAHA!

Last season, I liked Better Off Ted which is scheduled to comeback midseason this year. Quirky comedy. It’s good.
Big Bang Theory is still really funny. Seriously, what other program will offer up lines like “Kill Wil Wheaton! From Hell’s heart, stab at HIM!”
How I Met Your Mother kinda sucks now. Two and Half Men has run it’s course.
Law & Order is still good. SVU kinda sucks now though.
All those shows on Discovery and the History channel get kinda boring kinda fast. I’m sick of those shows now.

You know what you should watch? Simpsons and wrestling.

My grandfather was a boxer. Killed a man in the ring. I never got into the wrestling and boxing things.

And I’ve seen the Simpsons. Have loved the Simpsons. But the Simpsons left me a long time ago. Just sayin’.

The Simpsons haven’t gone anywhere. They’ve been on Sundays at 8 for about 15 years now. You left! Shame on you.

The show may not have gone anywhere but the content did. I blame the writers.

And it’s been on Sunday nights for closer to 20 years. :P Tracey Ullman should have gotten part of the profits.

Here’s the thing about Big Bang Theory. The main guy and the girl next door have hooked up, but it hasn’t hurt the show because it’s not focusing on their relationship. Most sitcoms become relationship shows once the couple hooks up. This show isn’t really doing that.

Well that’s good then – that usually signals the end of a show, that and when they bring in the new kid.

  3. I like the Good Wife too, but it might end up being one of those shows I get tired of. Dramas bore me a lot.

However, I lasted a long time with Medium, 4 of the 6 seasons. It’s very well-written, and there’s no bubble gum in sight. Maybe I should start watching again…

Not a stick of bubblegum anywhere that I’ve seen so far. I wonder if my library has the season DVD’s …

  4. I’m not good with shows, I try to watch them and I just can’t get into them. I like shows like 60 minutes, 48 hours or my latest is Shark Tank and here we also have Dragon’s Den (based on the same premise).

I’ve had cycles like that, where I can’t seem to find anything at all so I just give up. The last couple of years have been okay for me as far as TV goes.

I love the name Dragon’s Den!

  5. I am really fond of Saving Grace. I don’t know if it is the idea of God sending angels after mere potential or an angel with a sense of humor and a less than angelic face. Plus they always get the bad guy. I’m a sucker for a fairy tale.

I love when the bad guy gets got, and I love happy endings. :)

  6. I enjoy Supernatural, Dexter, Grey’s Anatomy, Bones, & House. Recently I’ve discovered Lie to Me, Weeds, & Californication. The last two are on Showtime (or Netflix watch instantly) and are not at all family friendly.

LOVE House! I started watching Lie to Me last year but I think it was on a different night and interfered with something else so it ended up getting cut from my list. I enjoyed it though, and loved the pics they’d insert of people making the expressions they were talking about.

I’ve seen Dexter a few times, when it was on CBS. (Don’t have Showtime.) Me and my serial killers, I loved the premise of a serial killer trying to “use his skills for good.” But CBS doesn’t seem to be showing it anymore, or any network.

    • Dexter is in it’s 4th season on Showtime. The Dexter books by Jeff Lindsay are dark, funny and would probably be right up your alley. They are, in order: Darkly Dreaming Dexter, Dearly Devoted Dexter, Dexter in the Dark, Dexter by Design and Dexter is Delicious.

      Thanks for the tip!

      • Oh, and I think the pictures of people making the expressions they are talking about is what hooked me to Lie to Me. When I first started watching it, I thought it was an interesting premise, then the first set of pictures popped up and I was astounded that we all really do make the same expressions. Well, that and I’ve been in love with Tim Roth since I watched ‘Rob Roy’ for Liam Neeson and left the theatre wondering Liam who?

So you like the British guys, huh? I love the accents too. :D

  7. A lot of shows sound great, but I don’t watch anything that isn’t on DVD. I do love Torchwood and Doctor Who… but one thing I like about some British TV is that they aren’t as compelled to run things into the ground. A season might be 15 episodes or 6–all depends on how many stories the writer has. They rarely keep writing just to keep the show on–like the original Office. Two seasons and that was it. Story told. Done. No more.

On a side note… I’ll be talking to a medium tomorrow. Not sure how I feel about that yet.

There are moments, believe me, when I think I should just wait for a show to run it’s course before I watch any of it. Usually the ones I like the most seemed to get canned first.

I’m fascinated to find out about your medium visit! May I ask what prompted you to decided to see one? If it’s not too personal or anything …
