Most of you know that my computer died back around Memorial Day, and that due to circumstances beyond our control we’ve not been able to fix it yet. In the meantime, Darc and I are sharing his computer.
Of course, his computer needs are a much bigger priority than mine so when he’s online I’ll putz around doing housework or watch TV or whatever, or sometimes I’ll go play on the laptop that we gave to the kids a few years ago. It’s fine for some kids games that don’t require Internet access. It’s one we picked up for Darc to use initially, but it was never a good machine to begin with. It’s old now, and really slow. Can you say Celeron?
I hop on that to at least get a head start on my Reader, but typing on that little keyboard makes me feel like I’m 7 again playing around on that tiny old portable typewriter that was lying around the house. Where are the keys? Where’s the number keyboard? Where’s the delete key? I can’t find a doggone thing, and my nails – while not as long as they were a few weeks ago, make it impossible to type a single key at any given time anyway. It probably looks like a bad cryptogram that a serial killer would use. Not to mention it has none of my bookmarks and hardly any of my add-ons. And you know I love me some add-ons. Poor thing would probably die of being overwhelmed if I were to put all my add-ons on it.
I feel like kitteh up there.
But you know what? It’s way better than nothing. It’s funny how things you used to look down on become so much more important when it’s all you have. So while I may complain about the little piece of crap, and believe me, I complain about it, I’ve grown to appreciate it in recent months. I think of it as an elderly relative in a nursing home, whose memory is fading. It means well. It tries hard to please me. It does the best it can. So I try to be patient and understanding, tell it how much it means to me, how glad I am it’s there. It’s taught me a little more thankfulness, and for that I’m grateful.

I remember when my family first got internet access, I swore that I didn’t want to use it. I said it is probably addictive and in the end, the whole thing probably isn’t needed when you have real human connections. Man a lot of things have changed. I was right about it being addictive.
Yeah, but without it, I’d never have met you, or WIGSF, or any of the other wonderful people I’ve met here. Or my husband. So, you know, I’m rather fond of it.

Many years ago, after a very disheartening divorce, I didn’t have a car for a short period of time. I’d watch people driving along in old, smoking clunkers, and I couldn’t help but realize the an old beat-up ride was much better than no ride.
Hoping you have a great weekend!
Whole lot of changes all at once – that’s always hard. Sounds like you’ve come through it well though.
You have a great weekend too Steve!

Do you still have the monitor/keyboard/mouse from the old computer?
Oh yeah, I have everything. Even the hard drive, which was tested in Darc’s computer and found to be just fine. The problem is the motherboard and CPU. It’s not terribly expensive, but I just haven’t had the cash needed to get new parts. In the meantime, it’s share and share alike!

We only need a system board, Bryce. It’s frustrating as all get-out, because they’re not all that expensive, but I have to get one with the processor already loaded because I don’t have a static-free environment to work in.

I’ve some good ol’ PC horror stories. My first computer was an 8088. CGA graphics with 640K RAM and a whopping 20MB hard drive. (Would you believe I never once filled it?)
The hard drive head would stick after shutdown so it wouldn’t move properly on start up. To properly start the computer, I would often have to hit my hand the right side of the computer at just the right moment otherwise it would not detect the hard drive properly and it would return a “HARD DRIVE FAILURE” message.
The top it off, the machine itself was incredibly sensitive to vibrations. If I kicked the table the machine sat on or beat my fist on the table top, the machine would reboot. It took me a year to figure out that it was me hitting the table that caused the reboots. I just though the machine liked to reboot whenever I got close to finishing a video game.
Towards the end, the space bar on the keyboard stopped working. To type things with a spaces between words I had to press ALT+32 instead of SPACEBAR. That effectively ended my playing of any video game that required rapid pressing or holding down of the spacebar.
Although the machine had a CGA card, my monitor was a monotone green. And the image was really scratchy. At times, it looked like a sonar screen in an old submarine movie.
That computer lasted me about ten years. I only got rid of it because I was moving and didn’t want to move it with me.
Right now, I’m on my sixth computer. Still have numbers 4 and 5. All PCs.
Wow, 10 years? Sounds like you got your money’s worth out of it! I think mine – the one that’s currently down – is my 4th since ‘96.

After reading your story and the others above, I feel pretty lucky. The computer I have at home is the first that I bought for myself with internet access at home, and it’s a really sweet iMac. Never gives me a hint of trouble. Previous to that I used to use the internet only on my lunch break at work.
Wow, you are that rare individual indeed who has no computer horror stories of one kind or another. I envy you!

It could only be made worse if you had your celeron with dial up! LoL
There you go, that exactly my point! Things could always be worse, right?

Oh forgot, love the new right hand colors. The same color as the gladiolas I bought last week.
Thanks! I was going for burgundy – I hate orange and I was trying to get away from the “traditional” Thanksgiving colors – you know, orange, mustard, dirt.
I love gladiolas! They’re so tall and graceful. Take a picture, I wanna see!!

My computer that crashed in September was a lot like the one up there. I swear I could hear it groan every time I asked it to do something.
I love my little tiny laptop. I still plan to get another desktop, but not til after Christmas.
Mine wheezes like it has emphysema or something.
Your little laptop is cute! What kind of desktop are you planning?
