A Little Bouquet

A couple weeks ago, I picked up a box of cake decorating supplies.  It’s been a while since I lost my old set and really, it was time for a new one.  I kept putting it off because I only decorate 2 cakes a year and it just didn’t seem like spending money for something I’d use that rarely was a wise thing to do.

But, it is my kids’ birthday cakes and you can’t put a price on that, plus the princess really wanted roses this year.  Well, roses I can do almost blindfolded, I used to make them by the hundreds when I was a young woman at my first job.  But for roses you do need a couple of specialty cake decorating items.

So, even though I bought it a couple weeks ago, I didn’t open the box until the night before I had to decorate the cake.  Surely a dumb move on my part.  Half the items in the box were missing.  All of the decorating bags were gone, and the writing tip was gone and what the heck was I going to do?

Well.  I improvised.  Thank goodness I had enough freezer baggies on hand that I could cut the corners off of to use as icing bags!  Note to self: stick with the freezer baggies when desperate, as regular baggies will split on you and get icing all over the place!

[To the person who took all those things out of the box, shame on you.  I know you’re stealing the socks out of the bags too.  It’ll come back to bite you one of these days, mark my words!]

And for those who were interested, here’s the baby girl’s birthday cake.  She picked the colors, and I made a rose for every year, with scattered rosebuds.  She was happy.  Smile

Tootsies

I actually found these over at iOwnTheWorld.  I love the “little bit of everything” aspect.  Sort of like a buffet, like Thanksgiving coming up.  Smile  These are mostly fun shoes, but they’re clever, and slightly wacky and appeal to my sense of humor.  I think my favorite are the chocolate sauce pair.  Although, the chewing gum ones are pretty neat too, lol.

Speaking of chocolate, I found this interesting post: Benefits Of Chocolate Milk After Your Workout.  Loving chocolate milk as much as I do, I was intrigued, to say the least.  However, I did give it up a few years ago so I’m not sure I’m ready to jump back in.  But it sure is fun to think about!

I posted a picture of my son’s solar system birthday cake over on my recipes blog, ( Birthday Cake ) if you wanted to see how it turned out.  Smile

Now it’s back to the grind for us!  But the day off sure was fun and sugar filled!  And had cake and ice cream too.  Winking smile

Weekending

I played God this weekend.  Yes I did too!

I created my own solar system.  I stuck it in the cold vacuum of space.  And when I was done, I rested.

See?  I told you!

Open-mouthed smile

My planets, however, were made from fondant, and the cold vacuum of space is my freezer.  My solar system is not quite to scale of the one we live in, and mine will ultimately rest, not hanging in space on the power of my word, but on top of my son’s birthday cake.

When he told me what he wanted a couple of months ago, I admit I was kind of intimidated.  I’ve never worked with fondant before.  Where could I get it?  Could I make it?  I found a recipe and discovered that making fondant, even by hand without a stand mixer, is easy-peasy.  Whew!  It’s like Play-doh!  Except it’s yummy and tastes like buttercream and you can actually eat it.  Hopefully, it’ll look okay once it’s all assembled.  I’ll post pics, of course.  Smile

I wonder if God got blue under His nails too?  Hmmm.

Weekending

It was a pretty special weekend for us here in the Darc house.  A certain pretty princess, who came into the world on a Sunday morning, turned 6 yesterday.  She has been so excited for so long!  A few weeks ago she saw me browsing recipes and one caught her eye.  She asked me, with sugar coated sweetness, if I would make it for her birthday.  This is the result:

I was so happy!  It’s been a long time since I’ve done a layer cake – usually I stick to sheet cakes for the convenience factor – so I was a tad nervous about how it would turn out.  For the recipe and more pictures, check out my Nessipes blog, or the At Grandma’s Table blog.  Best part, the princess was thrilledSmile

We decided to hit Borders this weekend before they disappeared.  Honestly, their sale prices were way higher than Walmart’s full prices.  A 40% off DVD cost $25?  And they call that a sale?    Now I know why they’re going out of business!  We dropped a dime on a few things – I found a book on the history of serial killers, booyah! – but for the most part were really disappointed in what we found.  Bye Borders.  It was real, it was fun, but it wasn’t real fun.

Darc did more keyboard shopping so I picked one up for myself too, one of those ergonomic dealies.  I swear, I’m trying really hard to get used to this thing.  I’m going to try to stick it out for a few days though.  I thought my typos were bad before!  Wow.

All in all it was a pretty great weekend.  How was yours?
