Whensday

It must be the pool.  He wasn’t even in the dream, but pools and swimming always remind me of him, and I guess it only makes sense that a dream about a pool party would bring his memory sharply into focus.

I still didn’t know how to swim, the summer I was 10.  Oh, I frolicked a lot in whatever swimming pool was available, and those weren’t hard to find in California in the 70s.  I was a water baby, you just couldn’t keep me away.  I had the chlorine-green blonde hair to prove it!

One place my mother and I lived, had a big rectangular pool right out front.  That blue door in the center on the 2nd floor was my apartment for a year.  It’s hard to see in the picture there, but just beyond that brick entry, was the pool.  That’s where I learned to swim.

Tucked away, in the last bottom apartment on the right, lived a man, his wife, and their 17 year old son.  The old man told everyone, even the kids, to call him Rick.  “No Mr for me!  I’m just old man Rick.”  He was the 1st grown-up I was permitted to call by his first name.  He spent his days sitting on a bench in front of his apartment, smoking and watching the kids swim.  He reminded me a lot of Jackie Gleason.

imageI learned a lot about Rick that summer.  He loved water, he loved kids, he’d been a diver in the Navy during the war (WWII) and his eardrum had burst during one of his dives.  He’d worn one of those old diving suits with the big brass helmet.  I had visions of him dressed up like an astronaut, only exploring the bottom of the sea for treasure, not space.

imageHe was kind and he smiled a lot.  He loved teaching the kids how to dive into the pool.  “Bend your knees just a little!  Keep your back straight!  Relax!”  Sometimes he’d throw the spare change from his pocket into the pool to encourage us to dive the 12’ in the unheated water to go get it.  Our reward was getting to keep it.  He taught me how to do the backstroke, and the butterfly, although I wasn’t very good.  I grew to love that old man, although in retrospect he probably wasn’t as old as I thought.  Not a gray hair on his head!  He was probably in his 50s.

His son, Rick Jr,  would dazzle us kids by climbing up on the railing in front of my apartment and jumping into the pool.  Oh he made my little girl heart flutter with his daring and bravado!

Even after school began that fall, I’d come home and see Rick on his bench, smoking.  I’d wave and he always waved back, ask how I was.  The weather turned cooler in November and one day his bench was gone.  Worried, I wanted to go check on him but my mother wouldn’t let me “bother” him.  “He probably just puts his bench away for the winter,” she said.

Could a man go that long without stepping outside to smoke?  I wondered.  My heart was scared and I didn’t know why.

One day in January, we ran into Mrs Rick coming out of the laundry room.  I grabbed my chance.  “How is Rick?  Is he alright?  Did he quit smoking or something?  I never see him anymore and his bench is gone!”

Her eyes clouded and I knew before she could say it.  “Oh sweetie, I’m so sorry, I thought you knew … Rick died last November.”

I don’t recall how I responded to her, if I said anything at all.  I do remember lying on my bed, weeping.  His wife was a widow, his son was fatherless, and I had lost a friend.  How was I supposed to get through this?  Rick was still teaching me, only now it was about death and sorrow.  Bend your knees a little!  Keep your back straight!  Relax!  If you think about it, if you keep that in mind, you can pretty much handle anything.  You can withstand the blows life will deliver, if you remember those things.

The aquamarine shimmer of a swimming pool will always stir my memories of old man Rick.  So will the sunlit sparkle of coins under the water.  Those memories of him are my own under-sea treasure.

Monday Meme-day

Okay, it may not be the “dog days” of Summer, but it IS the last Monday of Summer, officially, since the autumnal equinox is this week.  Sep 22, 2010, 11:09 PM EDT, to be precise.  After that the days get shorter and the nights get longer so lets all cry in our beer.  Actually, I really love Autumn, so I’m glad it’s finally here.  :)

(This meme found originally by me at Dog Days of Summer meme)

My uncle once: owned a ranch with horses.

Never in my life: have I been out of the continental United States.

When I was five: learned how to read.

High school was: something I don’t have much memory of.

I will never forget: when Darc proposed or when my children were born.

Once I met: Miss America.  I was in 6th grade at the time.

There’s this girl I know: who has a birthday this week, on Thursday.  Maybe stop by her blog and wish her a happy one.   :)

Once at a bar: I insulted a man who was trying to pick me up.  Drinking age at the time was 18, but my friend and I were 14.  She looked a lot older, knew the owner, and got us in.  The guy hitting on me scared me, so I was rude.  He was about 40-something.

By noon, I’m usually: drinking coffee.

Last night: I watched a decent movie with Val Kilmer and Mira Sorvino called At First Sight

If I only had: that multi-million dollar winning lottery ticket … .

Next time I go to church: I will praise the Lord.

What worries me most: what, me worry?

You’ll know I’m lying when: I don’t lie, I’m sarcastic.

What I miss most about the 80’s is: my youth.

If I were a character in Shakespeare, I’d be: old.

A better name for me would be: Queen!

I have a hard time understanding: stupidity.

If I ever go back to school: I’d be the oldest in my class.

You know I like you if: I tell you.

Take my advice, never: do things you wouldn’t want your kids to do, or find out about.

My ideal breakfast is: Lunch.

If you visit my hometown, I suggest you: do you mean where I was born, or where I live now?

Why won’t people: stop being stupid?

The world could do without: liberalism.

I’d rather lick the belly of a cockroach than: lick the belly of a spider.

My favorite blondes are: me!

If I do anything well, it’s: blog consistently.  ;)

And, by the way: I hope you had a great last weekend of Summer.  :)

Monday Mayhem

imageIt is a good day.  It’s a blessed day.  The whole weekend was blessed.  :)   And I am full of joy.  No, not the lottery; no, not a job, but a real answer to prayer.  So I’m basically floating on sunshine.  It’s a beautiful thing.

Other than that, it was a quiet weekend.  Went grocery shopping, watched a lot of movies.  Turns out I grabbed some at the library that I’ve already seen.  Years ago, but my Swiss-cheese movie memory is so bad that I didn’t even remember I’d seen them.  I was showing Darc my picks when he said, “We saw that.  Maybe ‘01 or ‘02, but we saw it.  Oh, and that one too.”  *sigh*  I watched one of them anyway.  Turns out I’d forgotten it all but the end.  *eyeroll*  You know, I remind me of one of the silliest kid’s jokes ever.  Pete and Re-Pete were sitting in a boat, and Pete fell overboard, who was left?  Re-Pete!  Pete and Re-Pete were sitting in a boat and … you get the idea.  That’s what my brain does with movies, I swear.  Most annoying movie memory ever, but really, more annoying for Darc than for me, because he doesn’t forget movies he’s seen.

So now it’s August, can you believe how fast the Summer has flown?  Hot, sunny, cloudless days to come.

And how was your weekend?

Tuesday Tootsies

Now that it’s officially Summer, I thought I’d so something on those strappy Summer sandals.

These are fun, I love the designs in the heel part.  The colors are kind of on the tropical side, I suppose, although they do feel a little like Autumn to me.

More on the dressy side, but the colors drew me in.  They reminded me of rainbow sherbet on a hot summer day at the beach.   :)

*

Can’t decide if you want to wear sandals or go barefoot?  Why decide?  Choose both!  :D

image

*

You can also enjoy that barefoot feeling with these too.  I love the color.  I could paint my toenails to match, heh.

Now we’re talking!  Strappy, high, little bit of cork, some shiny – this is what a Summer sandal is supposed to be.  :)

Oooh, pink, silvery and shiny!  Want!  I’m so in with these!

Welcome Summer!

As always, click the pics for links, and don’t forget to let your tootsies enjoy the Summer weather too.  ;)

Monday Summer Meme

I did a bit of looking – I thought today, being the 1st day of Summer, deserved a little something special to commemorate it.  :)   Do you have any idea how hard it was to find a Summer meme?  You’re welcome.  ;)

A Summer Meme

1.) What first tells you that summer is here?
The trees fully leafing out.

2.) Name five of your favorite distinctively summer habits or customs.
Independence Day with fireworks.
Turning on the A/C.
Jell-O desserts.
Grilling out.
Watering the garden.

3.) What is your favorite smell of summer?
Steak on the grill!  And a freshly watered garden at twilight.

4.) What is your favorite taste of summer?
Steak from the grill!  And ice cream.  :D

5.) Favorite summer memory?
Hmm, this is a tough one.  Perhaps Beach Boys in ‘82.  My birthday in ‘77.

6.) Extreme heat or extreme cold? Which would you choose and why?
I hate them both but if I have to choose one, I’ll go with cold, for the simple fact that I can always toss on another blanket when it’s cold, but there are only so many clothes I can take off when it’s hot.

7.) What books do you plan to read for the season?
For the season?  I don’t read “for the season”, I just read what seems interesting, in every season.

8.) How does the summer affect your faith? Is it a hindrance?
LOL  My faith cannot be impacted by summer, silly meme!

Okay, now it’s your turn.  :D
