You know, watching that movie about time travel the other night made me think about things like living in another time. Or traveling to one. I suspect a great number of people would sign up for trips to the past if it were possible to do such a thing, to see the pyramids being built and things like that.
And while there are certainly things in my own life that I’d like to go back and change, I think I’m pretty content to simply read about great historical eras. Or watch movies about them.
I really like living now, in a lot of ways. Sure, there are societal and cultural things I wish were different, but overall, I really like our modern technology and conveniences. Can you imagine having to go out and kill your dinner for the night? Or chop down wood to keep yourself and your family warm? Sewing all your own clothes from cloth you’ve woven yourself from sheep you’ve sheared yourself? Drinking milk from cows or goats you’ve milked yourself? Making your own cheese?
Don’t get me wrong, I think all those things are pretty cool and I kind of wish I could do them. At the same time, I’m awfully dang thankful I can run to the store if I need or want something, or even through the drive-thru if I don’t feel like cooking. And then I can just hop in the car and don’t have to hitch up the horse and wagon.
Medicine has come a long way too. Sure, it’s not arrived yet – despite what many doctors would have you believe – but it is certainly much farther long than it was in the time of say … not washing their hands between the autopsy and the birthing chamber.
So I guess today I’m grateful for the now. There’s a reason God put me in this time and not in any other – He probably knew I wouldn’t survive! LOL So I’m here and I’m now, and that makes me very glad indeed. 🙂

I used to read the Little House books and think it would have been neat to live back then. If I’m honest with myself though, I’d have to admit that I couldn’t live without things like a vacuum cleaner and washing machine.

Today I’m thankful that Packing Day is going well, and that Moving Day will be over with soon. Oh yes, and I’m super-thankful that I got phone lines hooked up in time!

I’m thankful that I started going to Church. We had a “cleaning morning” today (to dust the high up places in the Church) and it was so much fun. Our priest is hilarious! It is such a nice place to go to – built in 1884 (but has had some work done since LOL).

That’s pretty much how I feel too. I love reading about it, love watching movies about it – might even like to visit one of those “live like this for a week” theme park kind of things. But as a permanent way of life, there’s a reason modern conveniences were invented!

I think I’d be lost if I were born in in another time. I think I’d of made a pretty darn good hippie though. I’m all for causes, movements, and peace and love. It’s funny the advances that are second nature to us now though. I don’t know how many times we’ve made a trip to the store at midnight for milk.
Aren’t midnight runs awesome? You find so many things you realize you absolutely MUST have. 😀
Today I am thankful for having good health coverage.
The fiance and I went to the dentist yesterday, not having seen a dentist for five years myself, and Matt not having seen one in ten, we only expected the worst. He had to go in a week ago for an emergency appointment (three broken teeth – the Dentist nearly fainted when Matt told him they’d been broken for over a year), and then we both went in yesterday for proper cleanings and exams. We didn’t know what we had for coverage, so we were nervous about the bill and what our insurance would cover. We were already up to $1,200 in dental fees simply for the emergency appointment, and the cleanings, and we both have to go back for more work (fillings for him, a root canal, and a bite plate for me), but we have 100% coverage, so we don’t have to pay a dime. I could have danced and kissed her when the secretary put the bill through.
I’d have kissed her too! 100%, that’s awesome! I’m so jealous! But good for you for getting all that taken care of. 🙂

I’ve come to the conclusion I need to ONLY take a $10 so I have enough to buy a jog of milk and maybe one other thing that costs a couple dollars. If I take the bank card, I’m screwed, suddenly it turns into “well since we’re here…”
