Tipper Gore discovered that her husband’s great great uncle, Gunther Gore, was hanged for horse stealing and train robbery in Tennessee in 1889.

The only existing photograph shows him standing on the gallows. On the back of the picture is this inscription: "Gunther Gore; horse thief. Sent to Tennessee Prison 1883, escaped 1887. Robbed the Tennessee Flyer six times. Caught by Pinkerton detectives, convicted and hanged in 1889."

After letting President Clinton’s large staff of professional image consultants review this discovery, they took the following actions to assist Al’s campaign to become our next president. They decided to crop Gunther’s picture, scan it in as an enlarged image, and edited it with image processing software so that all that is seen in the final picture is a head shot.

Along with this enhanced photo, the accompanying biographical sketch was sent to the Associated Press:

"Gunther Gore was a famous cattleman in early Tennessee history. His business empire grew to include acquisition of valuable equestrian assets and intimate dealings with the Tennessee railroad company. Beginning in 1883, he devoted several years of his life to service at a government facility, finally taking leave to resume his business enterprise with the railroad. In 1887 he was a key player in a vital investigation run by the renowned Pinkerton Detective Agency. In 1889 Gunther regrettably died suddenly during an important civic function held in his honor when the platform on which he was standing collapsed."

(Now that’s what I call spin!)

It’s the weekend, laugh, and have an excellent one.  😀

  1. Did they really spin that? Is that a true story?

Oh I’m sure it’s not. 🙂 It’s just a demonstration of how you can make anything sound good (or bad!) if you put the right words to it.

  2. Okay, that owl freaks me out.

I didn’t even know it was Friday, much less the 13th. Thanks for keeping me current.

Isn’t he creepy looking with those claws?

You’re welcome hon. Just doin’ my part. 😉

  3. In writing class, I show my students a photograph of a boy sitting in a chair. As far as they cans see, the boy is alone. I have them write a description of the photo, and to write a story about him. Almost always they write stories of loneliness and parental neglect.

Then I show them another photo. The shot shows the boy and his parents and his brother sitting right nearby. The whole tone of the photo changes.

You never know what is cropped out. All sides do that!

You know what’s weird? That almost all of them see something negative. Alone doesn’t mean lonely or neglected. But yes, you never know what’s cropped out. I tell my son that about movies all the time – you just can’t see the guy working the puppet, son, but he’s there!

  4. If you’d said that story was true, I wouldn’t have been surprised in the least. That owl gives Colbert’s eagle a good run for his money! 😀

Didn’t it sound like something that could have actually happened? And when you think of all the BS that’s come out of Gore with the “I invented the Internet” and the whole “global warming” scam, the Tennessee horse thief spin seems mighty plausible. 😉
