Manor Moil

funny pictures-Wow, Monday rolled right over your face, dinnit?

Nah, it wasn’t Monday that did it, it was Saturday.  I swear, we did more running around that day than we probably have in a year.

But we have all new tires now and the problem with the battery has been taken care of!

The tires took the longest so we walked around … and around … and around … and around the mall, well mostly Sears but the mall too.

We are not mall shoppers.

And they lied about where their food court was.  I just looked it up online too – the food court is actually about 5 miles from where the signs said it was.  You think I’m kidding – let me show you!  Check this out!

FireShot capture #011 - '' - www_simon_com_mall_MallDirectoryPrint_aspx_id=1251

1 is where we walked out of Sears into the mall.
2 is where we saw the sign that said “Food Court!”
3 is where we decided to forget it and just go back to Sears.
The circle is where the food court really is, and you can see the trail of bread crumbs I made to show you how far away it was.  Heh, now that I look at it like this, that layout seems kind of lame.  You can’t cut across sections, like from green to red, or blue to purple.  You have to go all the way around.  See?  5 miles easy.  Quit rolling your eyes at me.

So that’s why my place is a mess and I’m going to be focused on housework today.  All that running around over the weekend, combined with the deadline on getting the edits done the previous week and a half, mean I did little to no housework.  Okay okay, I blew it all off, all right?  But I edited my husband’s book.  Open-mouthed smile  Neener.  Now I have to pay the piper, lookout vacuum, here I come!

And how was your weekend?

A good laugh for people in the over 50 group Winking smile

When I bought my Blackberry, I thought about the 30-year business I ran with 1800 employees, all without a cell phone that plays music, takes videos, pictures and communicates with Facebook and Twitter.  I signed up under duress for Twitter and Facebook, so my seven kids, their spouses, 13 grand kids and 2 great grand kids could communicate with me in the modern way.  I figured I could handle something as simple as Twitter with only 140 characters of space.

That was before one of my grand kids hooked me up for Tweeter, Tweetree, Twhirl, Twitterfon, Tweetie and Twittererific Tweetdeck, Twitpix and something that sends every message to my cell phone and every other program within the texting world.

My phone was beeping every three minutes with the details of everything except the bowel movements of the entire next generation.  I am not ready to live like this.  I keep my cell phone in the garage in my golf bag.  The kids bought me a GPS for my last birthday because they say I get lost every now and then going over to the grocery store or library.  I keep that in a box under my tool bench with the Blue tooth [it’s red] phone I am supposed to use when I drive.  I wore it once and was standing in line at Barnes and Noble talking to my wife and everyone in the nearest 50 yards was glaring at me.  I had to take my hearing aid out to use it, and I got a little loud.

I mean the GPS looked pretty smart on my dash board, but the lady inside that gadget was the most annoying, rudest person I had run into in a long time.  Every 10 minutes, she would sarcastically say, "Re-calc-u-lating."  You would think that she could be nicer.  It was like she could barely tolerate me.  She would let go with a deep sigh and then tell me to make a U-turn at the next light.  Then if I made a right turn instead… .  Well, it was not a good relationship.  When I get really lost now, I call my wife and tell her the name of the cross streets and while she is starting to develop the same tone as Gypsy, the GPS lady, at least she loves me.

To be perfectly frank, I am still trying to learn how to use the cordless phones in our house.  We have had them for 4 years, but I still haven’t figured out how I can lose three phones all at once and have run around digging under chair cushions and checking bathrooms and the dirty laundry baskets when the phone rings.

The world is just getting too complex for me.  They even mess me up every time I go to the grocery store.  You would think they could settle on something themselves but this sudden "Paper or Plastic?" every time I check out just knocks me for a loop.  I bought some of those cloth reusable bags to avoid looking confused, but I never remember to take them in with me.

Now I toss it back to them. When they ask me, "Paper or Plastic?" I just say, "Doesn’t matter to me.  I am bi-sacksual."  Then it’s their turn to stare at me with a blank look.

This Week’s Thoughts

In the first study, Cambridge scientists found for the first time that red blood cells have a 24-hour rhythm.

This is significant, they explained, because circadian rhythms have always been assumed to be linked to DNA and gene activity — but, unlike most other cells in the body, red blood cells do not have DNA.

"The implications of this for health are manifold. We already know that disrupted clocks…are associated with metabolic disorders such as diabetes, mental health problems and even cancer," said Akhilesh Reddy, who led the study. "By furthering our knowledge of how the 24-hour clock in cells works, we hope that the links…will be made clearer."

via Scientists Find the Tiny 24-Hour Clock in Every Living Thing –

I thought this was interesting.  I remember reading a study years ago that claimed that when people were denied access to sunlight, say by being in a cave or something, and denied access to TV and newspapers so they couldn’t tell the day, that humans naturally revert to a 36 hr cycle; i.e. up for 24, sleep for 12.  This seems to fly in the face of that.

4. Be nice. Even if you disagree with someone, it’s never appropriate to use insults or other offensive language. Rude comments don’t add any value to a discussion, and only divert attention away from the author’s work. It’s perfectly fine to offer constructive criticism, just be polite. If you see others writing disrespectful or incendiary comments, or you receive such comments on your own blog, ignore/delete them. Acknowledging them will only encourage the aggressor, so don’t waste your time.

via Are you well-versed in comment etiquette? — Blog —

This sort of made me chuckle.  Straight from WP’s own “mouth,” ignore/delete the “incendiary” comments.  Having a post that’s received it’s fair share of incendiary comments over the years, it goes without saying that I delete such comments.  What’s frustrating is that there are those who want to be critical of that, to accuse you of not being open to comments that disagree with you.  Such is not the case.  I have several comments on my particular post that aren’t in agreement with me.  What gets deleted is the troll-type stuff.  I call it drive-by hate: people with no blog of their own, using a fake email address, that only spout hateful comments.  People can disagree without being nasty.  Nasty gets deleted.
My thoughts and prayers go out to the people of Christchurch, New Zealand.  And to the families of those slain by pirates on the Quest.

The new broiler is a definite upgrade, but we’d like to ask BK R&D to please get back to the drawing board and invent something—anything—to alleviate that sinking feeling that sets in about 20 minutes after eating Burger King. Thanks.

That one’s for my husband, who has mentioned that “sinking feeling” on more than 1 occasion.  See Babe?  It’s not just you.  Smile

Morgan, over at House of Eratosthenes had a post the other day that kind of made me laugh.  Go check it out!  I’ll wait.  Smile

Not only is this all I need when a film comes out, but if I was a film critic this is pretty much all I’d provide. Guess I better keep the day job…

Yeah, the casting, who got an award for what, who’s directing, who’s hoping this is their big comeback vehicle — just kindly skip it all. Fill in the appropriate check marks, below, and that’s good enough for me. That’s more than good enough for me.

via House of Eratosthenes.

I was thinking of Darc and how he likes to watch movies, and how I like to watch movies, which sometimes is more like how a guy watches movies.  Don’t get me wrong, I still do the occasional “chick flick” but I won’t do “Rom-Coms” or comedies in general anymore.  I even snub romances now, for the most part.

I thought of WIGSF and Bob, and I think the linked checklist would be awesome for them and their movie marathon thing they do with their friends.

It’s a fortunate thing if I can remember if I’ve even seen a movie.  I don’t know why, but generally, when I see a movie, it goes in one eye, gains speed, and goes out the other.  One time I was searching through a playlist way back when we had cable and came across a movie I thought had potential.  I asked Darc, “This looks good,  how about this one?”

His reply?

“We saw that last weekend.”

… Oh.

I thought I’d keep a running list of movies I’ve seen over on Flixter, much like the Shelfari site, but I never remember to check in there, because I can’t recall anything about recent movies I’ve seen.  With the books at least I can go get it and have it in front of me to fill out the Shelfari info stuff.  With movies I’m at a complete loss.  Gosh, if I ever made it to Jeopardy, it would be on the Special Movie Edition day or something like that, and I’d stand there with my little buzzer thing and a completely blank look.  I’d have to start drooling or something so the audience would think I’d had a stroke, and not just a complete idiot when it comes to movies.

But I never forget a birthday.  Open-mouthed smile
