So, I played book roulette at the library again, having forgotten the awesome list that Steve gave me on the desk, and I’ve been reading this one called House of Lost Souls or something like that, by some British guy. My game of roulette involves reading nothing more that the back of the book jacket, or part of the inside flap, whichever. I take risks, yes I do. I live dangerously.
Anyway, this book is basically a scary book, or I should say it’s trying to be. It’s definitely creepy. But it’s rather meandering, which seems to be a feature of the British authors I’ve read. It seems to be about demons and Satanists.
But the strangest thing is that recently I’ve been in contact with someone I went to high school with. And in one of his letters to me he said, “Hey, remember when you and Jane used to play with that Ouija board at the bus stop?” Oh Lord! No, I don’t remember that. I remember the Ouija board, but not playing with it at the bus stop, of all places. Now, I don’t really believe in coincidences and it’s made me go hmm, that I’m reading a book about Satanism and get a letter from someone I haven’t spoken to in 30 years who reminds me of my own toying with that. Weird.
I had my son watch Apollo 13 this weekend and he actually sat enthralled through the whole thing. I was afraid he’d get bored half way through but he didn’t. I, on the other hand, bawled through most of it. Why, I have no idea. But thinking of lines like, “No disrespect Sir, but I think this will be our finest hour.” “The House and Senate today passed resolutions asking the American people to pray for the safe return of our astronauts.” “Failure is not an option!” made me long for a time in our country when heroes were lauded and patriotism was something to cherish. I really miss that.
Thus ends November. Can you believe the year is almost over? Just 1 more month. Can’t say I’m going to miss ‘09, but I am for sure looking forward to ‘10. I gots me a good feelin’.
