Put a lid on it!

It almost looks fake, doesn’t it?  That’s the picture I took just before the storms rolled in here, around 8 on Sunday night.  It stretched as far as the eye could see to the north and south of me.  One of the weird thing was – and you can sort of tell in the picture – the air was very still.  The flag wasn’t moving at all.  Yet the mass was pushing north quite fast.  Blue sky and storm clouds.  It looked like someone was actually putting a lid on this place!

Which is sorta true – we here in Chicagoland haven’t made our usual 60% quota of sunshine in May for over a decade.  Think about that.  Barely half of our daylight hours in May are sunny around here.  No wonder so many people are cranky all the time!

Heartfelt prayers to the people of Minneapolis, MN and Joplin, MO.  The Red Cross estimates that 75% of Joplin is gone.  Gone!  What terrible devastation!

I did have some awesomely fun news though.  I found out a childhood friend of mine is in the Midwest for a few days, and may actually be able to come over for a visit!  I haven’t seen him in like 8 years, and it was at least 10 before that.  We were nearly steps – or so we thought when we were kids.  Turned out my father’s intentions toward his mother were less than honorable, so we didn’t get to actually become brother and sister on paper.  In our hearts though, a different story.  Although, I don’t think we’d be able to get away with jumping on the bed to the tune of “Kung Fu Fighting” anymore and pretending to do karate kicks.  Winking smile  Still, it should be a great day.  Open-mouthed smile

And how was your weekend?

Thursday Thankfulness

It is that time of year, to reflect.  On this last Thankfulness post, I have a lot to be thankful for.  There was a huge change for me and Darc recently, as most of you know, and that is truly something to be immensely thankful for.

This whole weekly thankfulness exercise has been a good one for me I think.  It taught me to take stock of what I had, to realize that where I stand in terms of history is a pretty good place, comparatively.  We do live in a great age – technologically, medically, and even just general day-to-day living is vastly better than it was even 50 years ago, let alone a hundred.  It’s been good for me to remind myself of that.  All too often it’s so easy to fall into that trap of noticing what we lack, rather than what we have.

I am thankful for you, for the friendships I’ve found thanks to blogging and the Internet.  You’ve been pretty faithful in joining me here at what I’ve come to think of as my cyber kitchen table, to share of moment of your time with me, and I am thankful for that.  It’s been like a little party for me every day, friends stopping over for a little visit and a cuppa.

I am thankful 2010 is over, and that 2011 is beginning – I feel so optimistic I can’t even contain it sometimes.  That’s a pretty drastic change for me!  I’m not optimistic by nature.  I work hard to try to look on the bright side.  It’s all a part of my “fake it ‘till I make it” plan.  😀

I don’t know what’s going to become of Thursdays now.  Hopefully I’ll think of something.  In the meantime, what are you thankful for this week?

Wednesday Wombat

So, the other day we had some errands to run, library, stuff like that.  As I was opening the car door for my son, I happened to look down … and saw that he wasn’t wearing any shoes.

“What the … where are your shoes?!  It’s 20° out here and you don’t have any shoes on!”

“Uhm … I forgot, I guess.”

“You forgot?  You forgot your shoes?  How in the world does one forget shoes, especially when one is walking on frozen snowy concrete in 20° weather?!”

At which point his father dragged him back into the house for his shoes.  I swear.  *eyeroll*

Now that my friend has brought over all her unwanted sewing stuff, it’s brought home to me how desperately I need to do some organizing around here.  Did I say 7 bins of fabric?  Not little bins either, but the big ones you use to store holiday stuff.  The B-I-G bins.  7 of them.  Full of fabric.  7 giants bins.  The stack is about 6’ high, I’m not kidding.  She’s a quilter and has always maintained that if I just tried it, I’d love it.  See, I’ve always enjoyed making baby quilts by hand, but just a simple 2 piece kind of affair.  My friend makes the kinds of quilts that people will pay several hundred dollars for, really complex kinds of designs with tons of tiny pieces.  I just don’t have the patience (nor the space!) for all those little pieces.  I think I might be able to make some simple designs though.

But I digress.  I have all these bins of fabric now, and while my apartment is a decent one, it’s not big enough to just leave 7 giants bins sitting around, and the bins won’t fit in my little storage closet.  I’m going to have to break down and get several smaller bins so I can store them, there’s just no other way.  I figure if I’m going to do that, I might as well go the whole route and do the whole place.  It’s time.  I guess that’s sort of like a New Year’s Resolution, right?

Friday Fragments

Our blog buddy Mapelba is an artist, in addition to being a writer.  A few weeks ago she put up a post about doing some artwork on commission for the holidays, if you wanted something done.  What a unique gift idea!  Click the “holidays” link below to find the perfect gift for that hard-to-buy-for someone in your life.  🙂

The gift season is coming. Do you know what you’re buying yet?

I’ll write a story for that particular someone and I’ll use it in a work of art.

Over at Words are Art and Lake Belle I’ve got a deal on stories and art for the holidays. Yes, I know it is a wee bit early to think about holidays, but if you want something handmade, sooner is better.”

Speaking of gifts, did I mention my husband is also a writer?  And that his e-book is for sale on Amazon?  Well it is!  You can purchase a copy for the Kindle lover in your life, or if the one you love doesn’t have a Kindle, you can go to Smashwords and get a copy to read on your computer.  🙂

Check out my husband’s latest book, available for download!
A Fine Cast of Characters on Amazon US (Kindle version)
A Fine Cast of Characters on Amazon UK (Kindle version)
A Fine Cast of Characters on Smashwords (non-Kindle versions)

My “source” for jokes didn’t put one up this week, so I’m fresh out of funnies.  Instead I leave you with this fascinating shot from Canadian Rockies Waterfall Turns Blood Red.

Click the link above to read the whole article and see more pictures.  It’s pretty interesting, and cool, I think.  🙂

Have a blessed weekend.  🙂

Thursday Thankfulness

It’s almost like prayer, these moments of searching through the past week, trying to find that moment of “Yes, that’s what I’m thankful for this week!”  Sometimes I really have to struggle to find something because it’s been a particularly stressful week.  Other times, it’s almost overwhelming in the abundance of what I can choose to use for a post.  This week has been a very good week.  The whole month of August was a very good week.  🙂

I am thankful it’s September and Summer is coming to a close.  I’m thankful that I’ve been better at remembering to take my vitamins.  I’m thankful the kids have clothes and shoes for the Winter.  I’m thankful rent didn’t go up for this new lease.  I’m thankful there’s food in the cupboards.  I’m thankful there’s a song in my heart and a prayer of thanksgiving on my lips.  I’m thankful my daughter will start homeschool next week.  I’m thankful my husband published his first (of many!) e-book.

And I am thankful for you.  :)

There are some who are going through a triumphant phase in your life right now and I’m right there cheering with you.  Some are going through more difficult times, dealing with pain and loss of some kind, and my heart and prayers are hugging you close.  You’ve let me take a peek into your lives and shared your thoughts with me, and I’m thankful for that.  We’re connected – whether we agree on things or disagree, we’re connected in lots of ways – like a hand and a foot are both connected to the same body.  Know what I mean?  🙂

Insert your picture here, I’m thankful for you this week.  🙂
