Ten tips & tricks

Ten awesome Windows tips & tricks | Digital Crave – Yahoo!

here we offer a number of assorted tips and tricks, shortcuts and other little-known features built into your Windows machine. Some are tied specifically to Windows 7, where indicated, but most are applicable for all versions of Windows released over the past decade.

I think the neatest things which I discovered were the shaking trick to clear your desktop of too many open windows, and the trick to change the case from all upper to all lower.  Oh, and the batch renaming tool is cool too.  I love finding out all the little tips like this.  It’s sort of like a tiny Christmas.  :)  Just a couple weeks ago I found out that Windows comes standard with voice recognition software now.  Awesome!

Yes, I’m a dork, I know.  Quit laughing and go shake some windows!  🙂

GMail Add-ons for FireFox

It’s been a while since I’ve done a post about software or add-ons, or anything like that.  Recently I’ve come across a couple things I thought I’d share with you.

I found Send Later, Follow Up Reminders for Gmail | Download Boomerang in Chrome, and found that there is also a FireFox version, so you know I had to have it.  As big a fan as I am about scheduling my blog posts, doing the same thing for my email has huge appeal for me.  This handy dandy little program, Boomerang, will not only send out your emails on a schedule, but it will also come back to you if you don’t get a reply to an email.  So if you were expecting someone to answer back, and they don’t, and you forget about it, Boomerang can let you know.  Pretty doggone cool!

Boomerang also has a pay version that has a few more bells and whistles.

I saw some reports on this one: SaneBox is Awesome and I confess I didn’t download it because it’s $5 a month and I’m a cheapskate.  I don’t generate enough email to justify it, but if I did I’d be all over this one I’m sure.  The reviews were good and it sounds like it’d be a good product for a company.

This add-on is awesome.  ActiveInbox – Business Gmail Addon to Organize Email Tasks & Folders.  I’ve been using this one for a few years now, and I even wrote a little on this one back in 2009 in a post called Twitterpated « The "Ness" in DarcNess 😉.  Back then it was called GTDInbox (for Get Things Done) and it’s still as cool now as it was then.  It really helps you streamline and organize your email.  You can also find it here: Active Inbox HQ, outside of FireFox.  I can testify that it does indeed work with the latest FireFox upgrade.  They also have a pay version that includes a few more features.

The other add-on for Gmail is also one I wrote about in the Twitterpated post.  It’s called Integrated Gmail :: Add-ons for FirefoximageIt’s also just as nice now as it was back then.  Hasn’t changed much at all, just kept pace with all the FireFox upgrades – which is no mean feat, I tell ya!  Just a year ago FF was 3.6, and now it’s 14.1!  Sheesh.  Anyway, what’s nice about Integrated Gmail is that you can have multiple Google programs open in a single tab.  Their home site is:  I love that you can collapse all the elements and that you can have everything all in one place.  And now you can even add non-Google sites, such as Amazon for example.  Talk about 1-stop shopping!

If you try something I’ve mentioned here, I’d love to hear about your impressions of it.  And if you know of something I haven’t mentioned that’s made your GMail experience more streamlined and efficient, I’d love to hear about that too.  Smile

A Drive in the Clouds

The editing on my husband’s latest book began a week or so ago, as some of you know.  I do a little bit here and there to help out with proofreading and whatnot, when he asks.  The biggest fear though is losing the work in a computer crash.  If you’ve known us any length of time, you know this has happened to us more than once.  Yeah, yeah, back up, we know!  And we try!  But sometimes crap happens, like when we lost both our computers in 2009-10.

I happened to come across a couple of articles recently while reading the news and I thought they had some great information – good enough to share.  Apparently Google and Microsoft are competing in a veritable Drive Derby with each other and the storage service DropBox, and are offering some pretty nice packages for users to save stuff in the Cloud.  For free!

Seriously sweet.  Smile

Of course, being Google and Microsoft, they are more than willing to sell you extra space if you need more, too.  But their prices are pretty reasonable, so that’s a good thing.

For anyone who’s ever lost stuff in a computer crash (and who hasn’t, really?) then the Cloud is for you.  It’s just a matter of choosing which service you want to go with.  Me being the greedy girl I am, I’ll use both, on all my email accounts!  Having lost a few years worth of pictures in the past, I’m going to grab as much Cloud storage as I can get.

Now my husband has options too.  No more losing 75% of a book’s edits to a drive crash.  (Gosh that one hurt!)

So here are the links to the articles so you can check it out yourself.  I’ll see you in the Cloud!

Google Drive, Microsoft SkyDrive — What does moving to the cloud mean? | Fox News

You get 5GB of storage for free on Google Drive, which is a pretty good deal, and when you log into Google Documents you’ll notice that all your documents, photos, and attachments have become a part of Google Drive.

The first 2GB of space is free on DropBox.

I Quit

imageKitteh here knows how I feel, except it’s not the caffeine part of my breakfast of champions that I’ve given up, it’s the nicotine.

Yes, that’s the new aspect of my life that I was trying to get through.  Aren’t you glad you know now?  ;)  I know, a big letdown, but it wasn’t something I felt I could talk about until I was able to get over the worst of it successfully.  And frankly, I wasn’t sure I’d make it to Wednesday.  Having spent at least 25 of the last 30+ years smoking, it is indeed a new aspect of life for me.  Yeah, I’ve quit a handful of times before, since I first started smoking on that long ago day back in the 70’s.  And I’ve had moderate success.  But smoking has been a way of life for me, and the security blanket that I’ve always desperately clung to (or returned to) in times of stress or frustration.

Yeahhh, don’t judge me.  I’ve seen you sneak that chocolate, that ice cream, snack on those chips when you get stressed out too!  I know about your doughnuts and fried chicken, your candy and your Facebook.  We all have our weaknesses and smoking is mine.

But in a bizarre way, I feel like I’m letting my team down.  Smokers are so maligned and vilified, and I feel guilty for reducing the numbers.  Smokers are treated like the ugly stepsisters of Cinderella and I resent that.  Smoking is legal and for the record, it will always BE legal, because the government needs you to smoke.  If they made it illegal they couldn’t tax it unfairly anymore, and Lord knows they’ll never give that up.  So smoking will always be legal, and tobacco companies will always be in business.  And smoking is kind of an American thing to do, since it was our Natives who first shared the idea of smoking with the Europeans who came to visit.  So there.

I made the decision way back in July, and I didn’t even tell Darc about it until late in December sometime.  I know, from past experience, that both of us quitting together is … not a good thing.  So when I told him I was quitting, I made sure he understood that I was going to be the one to go first, and that I wasn’t going to impose my decision on him in any way.  That really wouldn’t be fair to him.  He has been amazingly considerate and understanding.

This wasn’t something I really wanted to do, either.  For the record, I like smoking.  And I’m not sure what compelled me to say, “This is it, it’s time now,” but I did.  I don’t feel I deserve a whole lot of credit for my efforts either because it was just something I had to do, like take the chicken out of the oven, or get in the shower.  This needs doing, so do it.  I gave myself about 6 mos or so to get used to the idea, and I think that helped.  And I’ve been praying a lot.  A LOT.

And because I seem to be one of the people who procrastinates until the last minute in order to make the least effort possible, I didn’t use any kind of stop-smoking aids.  To me, using an aid would feel like prolonging the agony.  So I did it the old fashioned way.  Cold turkey – 3 days and it’s done.  They’re not the most pleasant of days because let’s face it, it’s withdrawing from a drug like any junkie, and withdrawal sucks.  It’s sort of like labor.  You just have to get through it, but once you’re done, you’re done and you have the satisfaction of knowing it’s over.

So, things have been a bit … terse, here in the Darc House.  I’ve had to just sort of pull back and keep to myself in a lot of ways, just to maintain some semblance of control.  It’s not Darc’s problem and it’s not my kid’s problem, and I don’t want to take it out on anyone.  And because I’ve been unable to just smoke it out, I seethe a little more.  My crutch is gone.  And that makes me tense.  And uptight.  And just a leetle bit c.r.a.n.k.y.

But I have survived the 1st week, and so has my family!  They are all still alive!

Now you know.  Yeah, it’s a new aspect of my life.  More on the snarky side to be sure, but it’s a smoke-free kind of snark.  ;)  Oh, and for the record, I am not, and never will be, one of those dreaded “reformed smoker” types.  So anyone else here who wants to light up while you read my blog, please feel free.  Just please use an ashtray.  😀

Friday Fragments

So I’m sitting here, trying to think of what to blog about, for the Friday after Thanksgiving.  A day when probably no one will even visit my blog.  So if you do, if you’re here and reading this, thank you.  :)  Your visit is a pleasant surprise.

I thought of regaling you with a weird story from my youth, but upon further reflection, decided against it.  Too weird and a bit too revealing with the personal bits.  Can’t tell you all my secrets, you know.  ;)  I looked around for some jokes I might share, but nothing good has come through my inbox recently.

So I’m hearing the TV in the background as Darc watches the game, thinking of my disastrous pick of the Giants over the Broncos.  I knew, when I made the pick, that whichever one I chose would be the losing team.  And I hate the Giants.  There, that makes me feel better.  :)

Here’s something you may or may not have been aware of … did you know that WordPress has a little widget you can put on your sidebar for people to easily subscribe to your blog via email?  It’s easy-peasy.  Go to your dashboard, then Appearance, then Widgets, and look for Blog Subscriptions on the list.  Add it to your sidebar and now, voilá!  People – whether WP users or not – can receive email updates to your blog.  See?  Check out my upper left hand corner!  Better yet, click the button, and you’ll never miss a day of Falcony joy.  :D  Want more info?  Go here, here, and here

Here’s a cute video – everyone needs a kitteh like this one!

Have a wonderfully awesome weekend!
