Let There Be Light!

Pretty much ever since we moved in, this light has bugged me.  I don’t know if you can tell from this shot, but there is only 1 side glowing light on the ceiling.  It’s a 3-light fixture.  I can’t even begin to tell you how many times I’ve changed one of the bulbs, only to have it burn out … before I was even down from the ladder.  No matter how hard I tried, or what brand of bulbs I got, 2 of the 3 always blew out in a matter of days, if not hours.

Eventually we learned to just … live with the dark.

I hate poorly lit kitchens.  Some people are fine with that kind of ambiance, but for me, the kitchen must be BRIGHT.  I’m handling knives here, people!  ;)  20130211_091632

A few months ago, we asked management if it was possible we could change out the fixture and buy our own.  Oh sure! they said.  Matter of fact, if you want one of the crew to put it in for you, just say the word!

We were so excited!  So we planned that after the holidays, sometime into the new year, we’d go light shopping.

Finally this past weekend, we found one we liked at a price we liked, on sale even!  Score!

I went over and talked to one of the ladies – she’s such a doll, Miss C – and told her we’d found a light and could she schedule a maintenance call for me to have someone install it.  Which she did.

The next day, of the guys came over – we’ll call him MG D.  (for Maintenance Guy D).  He thought I needed a light bulb changed – do people really call for that? – and balked when he saw that it was a fixture.  First he told me they weren’t allowed to put in non-standard fixtures, and I explained that I’d talked to everyone at the office and they’d all cleared it.  Then he said it was a much longer job than he anticipated and would I mind if he came back after lunch?

Sure, I’m good with that.

That was Monday.

On Tuesday, I went over to the office and talked to them again.  There’s a new head manager there, Miss J, well, new since last year anyway, and she told me that no, I wasn’t allowed to put in a non-standard fixture.  Ummmm.  Hmm.  A rule change?

I explained that I’d talked to management about this for the past few months, was there something I could have misunderstood?

She said she’d get back to me the next day.

Wednesday came and went.

Thursday I went over to the office again, and asked if there was any update on the status of me getting my light installed.

The new lady, Miss J, said, “Yes, you’re on schedule for this week.  If they’re not there today, they’ll be there tomorrow.”  And she smiled.  She’s a hard one to get to know, pretty shy and reserved like I am, more of the paperwork sort than the people sort.  And our first introduction to her was over the whole oven thing.  So we’re still kind of tentative around one another.  But the smile was good.

Perhaps there really is a payoff to taking in a couple dozen cupcakes to the office every so often.  😉

Friday morning I got the knock on my door and MG D was back, with drill in hand.  We chatted while he worked and I got to know him a little better.  That was nice – I like knowing who’s in my home.

By the time he left a couple hours later, I had this:

20130215_125400B

LIGHT!  Bright, beautiful, glowing light!  The kids and I cheered, we were so happy.  We can see!

It’s so nice and bright that I don’t always need to turn on the light above the stove now, unless I’m actually cooking.  Bonus, it fit ALL my criteria:

  • it’s bright
  • it’s pretty
  • the shades point down so bugs can’t get in there and die, leaving those charming bug corpse shadows that occur from time to time
  • the light points down, where I need it, and not up, where I don’t
  • it hangs lower, saving me from having to climb at least 2 steps on the ladder, and my knee will be ever so grateful
  • I won’t have to take it apart just to put a new bulb in if one burns out
  • there’s no fiberglass insulation to get in my eyes if I need to change a bulb either, like the old fixture
  • and it was on sale and cheap

WIN!

This is where I do the Snoopy Happy Dance.  😀

And how was your weekend?

Big 10 Inch

It’s 10 full inches!  I kid you not!

I’ve had this song going through my head since Thursday.

Aerosmith–Big 10 Inch

We got a new bed.  A new bed!  Oh my gosh!  For years we’ve been sleeping on this piece of crap – CRAP – that looked like a bed, but was really little more than a glorified hammock.  It’s a long story, the trials our backs have been through in the last 10 years and the how’s and why’s aren’t all that important here.

Anyway, our old bed was fairly standard height, I thought.  Came up about 20” from the floor, easy to sit down on from a standing position.  But this new bed sits 10” higher.  This puppy is a full 30” from the floor.  Let me put it this way – if I were a guy and wore guy’s pants, my inseam would be 32.  Yep, I have to climb into this bed just to sit on it!  I think I’m going to need a step.  Seriously.  It’s nearly half my height!  When did beds get so freakin’ high?  That 10” is the difference between getting into bed, and climbing into bed.

I confess, it is easier to make it since I don’t have to bend over as far, but still.  I get into it more than I change the sheets.  I’m think I’m going to look into steps.

10” steps.

Here’s a picture I took right after the delivery guys left, so you can see I’m not making it up about how tall it is.  090811164257

My back has been saying, “Ahhh!” since then.  Smile  Every day seems a little bit better than the day before.  I know it will take some time for it to totally readjust from the hella-bed we had before, but so far things look promising.  Woo!  Thank you God for the new bed!

And even for the 10” too.  Smile

Yeah, I know what you were thinking there.  Perverts.  Heheheheh.  Open-mouthed smile

Many happys

funny dog pictures - I haz many happys.

The waitress didn’t know it was my birthday, but she gave me an awesome gift anyway.  When she placed the check down on the table, she leaned over close to me and said, “Your kids sure are sweet!”

Yeah, you probably saw my proud mama grin all the way to there.  Open-mouthed smile

Darc surprised me by taking the day off from work, too.  He didn’t tell me, of course.  Then, he “had some errands to run” which meant he surprised me by bringing me back some ice cream.  My favorite flavors too!  It must be love when a man brings ice cream to his lady.  Open-mouthed smile

It was a really nice day.  And I still haven’t picked out my gift either!  I just have no idea what I want.

On a side note, did you know there will be a total eclipse of the moon tomorrow night?  But, only those in parts of Africa and the ME will be able to see it.  Bummer for me!  I found that out because I was taking pictures of the moon earlier and wondered if it was a full moon – can’t recall the last time there was one on my birthday.  Just looked it up – 1984 and 1995.  I should have remembered those.  Well, for sure I will the next one in 2014!  I don’t know why I notice things like that.

Anyway, my day was great and I hope yours was too.  Smile

Marvelous

So what was the big cause for all the excitement on Friday, you ask?  At least, those of you who also follow either me or my husband on FaceBook did.

Well, it’s this – we finally got our own Internet service, and no longer have to rely on the borrowed connection from the complex here.

Can I have a “WOO!”?  Open-mouthed smile

We found this awesome service, and we have 2 weeks to try it out and we can return it any time for free within those 2 weeks if we don’t like it for any reason.  So that’s pretty nice.  The price is reasonable, if we move we can take it with us, and heck, if we travel we can take it with us.  Sweet, huh?

And sooo freaking easy to set up!  I just plugged it in and there were like 3 steps and voilá!  Online!  Fast speeds too.  The first thing I did was log into my favorites list on YouTube and start watching some videos I haven’t seen in a year.  Like this one:

I want to do this if we ever renew our vows!

What a joyful way to wed!

And I’ll tell you a secret.

Remember when I did my own SSRLP?  (Super Secret Real Life Project)  Well, I finally got paid.  And … and … and … I ordered my own computer!  Oh my gosh, even typing it, it still seems so unreal!

For close to 2 years now I’ve gone without my own computer.  You have to remember, Darc and I each had our own computers when we met – heh, that’s HOW we met! – so we were always a 2 comp family.  He had his space, I had mine.  But for these 2 years we’ve had to share.  I think we did pretty well readjusting like that.  But sometime within the next 7 days I will have my own brand spankin’ new computer.  Can I have an “amen!”?

Praise God from whom all blessings flow, even new computers and Internet connections.  Open-mouthed smile

1TB.  I’m still pinching myself.

Now I have to go find a spot on my desk to put it.  My desk!  I haven’t sat at my desk for any length of time in almost 2 years!  I am so excited I can barely contain myself.  Open-mouthed smile

Post Christmas Happy

funny pictures - Shh! Wut dat? Is dat rayndeerz?

My son.  He tried to put up a brave front, he really did.  He grinned for the camera when he opened his presents.  He thought he was getting odds and ends type camping kind of stuff.  I’d been telling him that Christmas would be small, that we’d do the best we could with what we had, and he cowboy’d up.  Then I had him open one smallish gift that I insisted not be opened until close to last.  He ripped off the paper and tears sprung to his eyes.  He yelled, he “woo’d,” he fist-pumped, and he hugged us, saying it was the best Christmas ever.  He got the game he really, really, really wanted for the game system.

Best Christmas ever.  Now that’s what parents love to hear.  🙂

And my daughter got the Barbie she wanted so bad that she almost cried when she pointed them out to me a couple of months ago at the store, thinking they’d all be gone by whenever we might be able to get it.  She spent a good portion of Christmas day playing in the sink, watching Barbie’s hair change color.

It was a wonderful Christmas.  🙂

The only down side was Darc getting sick, and then the foot of snow that got dumped on the area, which meant the car needed to be scraped off, and he wouldn’t let me do it.  Now his chivalry has caused him to feel even worse, I think, but I’m hoping it’s that low point of sickness that comes just before it starts to break.  I’ve kept him supplied with hot tea with honey by the gallon, and lots of homemade chicken stew.  Hopefully he’ll wake up Monday morning feeling better.

It has been a great weekend.

So how was yours?

Wednesday Wonderful

Have you ever had one of those days?  The kind where it seems like God’s just smiling down on you from Heaven and things are just clicking into place, you’re getting all your goals accomplished for the day, you even seem to have time to spare.  Ever have those?

I believe I just did and I’m feeling oddly out of sorts, LOL.  As Darc and I like to say, “Where’s the other shoe?” only there didn’t seem to be one, not really.  I don’t really quite know how to deal with that.  I’m used to shoes falling.  Do people ever learn not to go through life ducking all the time?  I suspect I’m going to find out.  🙂

There was only one little not so bright spot – we didn’t get our phones.  Yeah, bummer, but we’ve gone 4 years, I suppose we can wait one more day, right?  Apparently, the delivery company experienced a flight delay.  Probably all the snow in the Midwest has messed up airports and stuff.  So not the big, not really.  Tomorrow.  Well, that would be today as you read this.  🙂

I’ve been working on the 2nd half of the SSRLP that I was working on a few weeks ago, remember?  I have just a few days left to finish and I’d like to get it done early.  It’s been a learning experience, to say the least.

Wow, can you believe it’s just 10 days until Christmas?  Really, it just dawned on me.  The kids have been counting down all week, but it didn’t really register until just now.  A week and a half!  My son told me what he wants to eat for Christmas dinner.  I think I just might be able to accommodate him this year.  :D  Joy!

Seriously, joy!  It, like, spills out sometimes, and I kinda hope I get some on ya.  😀

Wednesday Wonderful

image

I much prefer sunlight and blessing.  :)  Just sayin’.

***

So, I’ve been keeping busy during the day while Darc’s gone.  Housework.  Yeah, I’ve been doing housework.  I really hate doing housework when my husband is around.  I don’t know why, I guess I’m lame but that’s why you love me.

At least he comes home to a clean place and I feel like I’ve accomplished something.  So, win-win.  🙂

I am in a mood today – a good one – so this won’t be a wordy post.  I just need to quietly bask in the sun for a while.  And think about what I’m thankful for this week.  🙂
