It’s kind of a military week for me.  There was a lot of fly-over activity in the days preceding the 11th.  It happened last year too, so I’ve come to figure it’s just something the Navy base does this time of year.  I spent a lot of time over on Pinterest looking at a bunch of military pictures for one of my boards there and that kind of stuff always makes my heart swell with pride.  Then I caught a link to an amazing video in my Reader about one of our fighter squadrons.  My kids loved it too, so I was telling them about the Blue Angels and naturally I had to find a video for that too.  They can’t wait to see them in real life now.  :)  Yay!

I could have spent all day watching the “fly-boys” do their thing.

I didn’t grow up military, and I’m not married to a military man, and no one in my family is military anymore, so I’m not sure where this love of it comes from.  I mean, it’s not like I was bombarded with military stuff at any point in my life.  But my love for it is there.  And I am profoundly grateful for all they do for us.  For me.  For my children.  Without them, and their long history going back to the Revolutionary War, we would not be Americans today.  How in the world could I not be grateful for a huge part of my very identity?

So that’s my thankfulness for this month.  The United States Military.

Army.  Navy.  Air Force.  Marines.  Coast Guard.

Thank you all.

Friday Funnies

imageInnocence is Priceless

One Sunday morning, the pastor noticed little Alex standing in the foyer of the church staring up at a large plaque.  It was covered with names and small American flags mounted on either side of it.  The six-year old had been staring at the plaque for some time, so the pastor walked up, stood beside the little boy, and said quietly, ‘Good morning Alex.’

‘Good morning Pastor,’ he replied, still focused on the plaque. ‘Pastor, what is this?’

The pastor said, ‘Well son, it’s a memorial to all the young men and women who died in the service.’

Soberly, they just stood together, staring at the large plaque.  Finally, little Alex’s voice, barely audible and trembling with fear asked, ‘Which service, the 8:30 or the 10:30?’

As a crowded airliner is about to take off, the peace is shattered by a 5-year-old boy who picks that moment to throw a wild temper tantrum.  No matter what his frustrated, embarrassed mother does to try to calm him down, the boy continues to scream furiously and kick the seats around him.

Suddenly, from the rear of the plane, an elderly man in the uniform of an Air Force General is seen slowly walking forward up the aisle.  Stopping the flustered mother with an upraised hand, the white-haired, courtly, soft-spoken General leans down and, motioning toward his chest, whispers something into the boy’s ear.

Instantly, the boy calms down, gently takes his mother’s hand, and quietly fastens his seat belt.  All the other passengers burst into spontaneous applause.

As the General slowly makes his way back to his seat, one of the cabin attendants touches his sleeve.  "Excuse me, General," she asks quietly, "but could I ask you what magic words you used on that little boy?"

The old man smiles serenely and gently confides, "I showed him my pilot’s wings, service stars, and battle ribbons, and explained that they entitle me to throw one passenger out the plane door on any flight I choose."

Have a wonderful weekend!  🙂

Thursday Thankfulness

It is quite fitting that Veteran’s Day falls on Thursday this year, so that I can use my Thursday Thankfulness to say thank you to all who have served.  Without veterans, I probably would not be an American, might not even be here at all, living in this free and amazing country I call home.  I might not be a Christian, since freedom of religion is one of the freedoms I enjoy as an American.  Without veterans, there wouldn’t even be an America.

So I am thankful today for all the men and women who are serving, and have served, in all branches of our military.

Thank you, Veterans, for all you have done for our nation.

You answered your country’s call when she needed you.

You were there, you did what needed to be done.

I salute you, and thank you.

Monday Mayhem

There were so many things I was going to tell you about today, and now that I’ve sit down to blog about them, my brain blanked out.  *sigh*  Figures!  It felt like there was so much that happened over the weekend.  Not events or situations, but more like realizations and understandings.  Know what I mean?  The things that happened were more internal than external.  I should have taken notes.

I did discover, after doing a lot of research, that was I thought might be a potential medical condition really isn’t and is something easily treatable.  So that was a huge relief.

The kids did really well in school last week and the MiniNess is still in excited mode about it all.

Football started and the Patriots won!  Woo!

Thank goodness for to get scores, because without TV, I can’t watch a single game.  :(

So I’m trying to get back into football mode on my football blog.

Cigarettes cost over $6 a pack here now, so it was good timing for me to quit when I did.  They were under $5 when I quit.

OH!  I remember what I wanted to tell you!  On Friday and Saturday afternoons, there several military helicopters that few overhead toward the Naval Base, over periods of several minutes.  It was the oddest thing.  The base tends to run their aircraft north-south, and we’re more west of the base, so we almost never get fly-over.  I searched the local press and found nothing.  I went to the base website and got nothing, no special events or anything like that.  It was just weird.  I mean, the big heavy choppers, a half dozen both days, spaced about 5 minutes apart.  For a moment there it almost felt like we were being invaded and our boys were gearing up.  Totally weird.

So that was kinda my weekend.  You?
