This Week’s Thoughts

12 Most Beautiful Lakes in the World

via 12 Most Beautiful Lakes in the World.

image

How’s that for a tease?  Isn’t it stunning?

I’ve been to one of the lakes on the list, and if I ever get bitten by the travel bug, I know where I want to go.  I love beautiful places and these are some of the loveliest.

U.S. Neighborhoods with the Biggest Houses

via U.S. Neighborhoods with the Biggest Houses.

image

Guess where I live?!  Yeah, it isn’t in any of these neighborhoods!  LOL

I kind of like this house but it’s not in the #1 neighborhood.  And the #1 neighborhood isn’t where you think it is, I bet!

Lakefront Mansion Price Cut by $25 Million

via Lakefront Mansion Price Cut by $25 Million.

image

So, if you found any spare change in the couch cushions, maybe you could spring for this beauty now that it’s been marked down.

Goodness.  If 25M is what was cut, can you imagine what the original asking price was?  Sheesh!

The Most Dangerous Cities in America

via The Most Dangerous Cities in America.

image

You might not recognize that city pictured but I bet my husband does.  He and I have both been through there at one time or another.  (but not together) Briefly.  With reason.  It’s not in IL either.

No, Chicago isn’t on this list, but another IL city is!

World’s Best Ruins

via World’s Best Ruins.

image

Ruins often have a beauty of their own and Petra is one that captures my imagination for some reason.  There are lots of other places on the list, including one in America!  I just might get to that one some day.

Tasty Tuesday Travels

Think beauty.  Think mountains.  Think history.  American history.  Think Pennsylvania!

*

*

Did you know there are over 140 wineries in PA?  I didn’t either!

image

*

*

PA has a strong German population, and you know where there are Germans, there is beer.  I can say that because I’m half German.  Smile  Yep, the other half is Irish, and amazing enough, neither half likes to drink much.  Go figure!

image

*

*

Lebanon Bologna.  Looks like salami, but it’s made from beef.  Oh, I have to try some of this!

image

*

*

Scrapple.  It’s made from pork scraps.  And corn meal.  It’s like sausage.  Smile

image

*

*

Put a little PA syrup on that scrapple and I bet it really jazzes things up.  I love syrup on sausage.

image

*

*

Now this is a sandwich spread I could get into!

image

*

*

Speaking of sandwiches, how about some great bread?

image

*

*

How about some sausage soup?  Now that’s a way to eat sausage I’ve never tried.

image

*

*

Pork roast, anyone?  What about pork roast with sauerkraut?  It actually looks pretty tasty!

image

*

*

For dessert, some shoofly pie.  Smile

image

*

*

Whoopi pies!  Whoopee!

image

*

*

Like doughnuts?  (Who doesn’t?!)  Like potatoes?  Then you’ll love these potato doughnuts!  Don’t they look yummy?

image

*

*

And last but not least, one of the biggest reasons to visit Pennsylvania, Hershey’s!  Open-mouthed smile  Must. Visit. Hershey’s!

image

*

*

I traveled through PA when I was a kid, and it was one of the prettiest states I’d ever seen, and I grew up in CA.  I was particularly struck by western PA, through the mountain areas as we drove through.  We didn’t have mountains quite like that in CA.  Winking smile  That vision of loveliness has stayed with me all these years and one day I hope to return, and get some pictures next time!

Have an awesome day and as always, click the pics for links and, in some cases, recipes.  Smile

Did you know the oldest cheese factory in the US was in Ohio?  Me either!

image

*

*

And of course, you can’t have great cheese without some great grapes and wine, also grown in Ohio.

image

*

*

Mock chicken – an Ohio trend popular in the 70s.  Looks golden delicious, doesn’t it?

image

*

*

Of course, you can’t live in a cheese state and not have cheesecake.  One of the beauties of cheesecake is that you can make it either sweet or savory.  I’m ready to dig in!

image

*

*

I used to make toffee.  Is your mouth watering?  Mine is!

image

*

*

Behold, the Ohio Shaker Lemon Pie.  I adore lemon pie!  Not a big fan of meringue, but I love lemon.  This is how lemon pie should be done and I have to have this recipe.  Smile

image

*

*

You can’t visit the Buckeye State and not indulge in the candy Buckeye.  It’s the law!  Winking smile  Don’t they look tasty?

image

*

*

I’ve been through Ohio a couple of times.  The most recent time, we passed through the state capitol.  Their capitol building reminded me of our national capitol.  I remember thinking how pretty it was, near sunset, with that lovely dome.

As always, click the pics for links.  Have a great and tasty day!

Tasty Tuesday Travels

Monticello, Mt. Vernon, and Williamsburg.  Ham, and peanuts.  They like things salty in Virginia!  I knew about the ham, but I didn’t know that Virginia is also famous for its peanuts.  Smile

*

*

It’s a basket shaped like Virginia!  I love it, and want it!  Send me 2, would ya?  Thanks!

image

*

*

Must start the day off right, with a nice fine Virginia wine.  Smile

image

*

*

Oysters Rockefeller, yum!  I had these once.  Guy took me on a date – in the pre-Darc days of course! – and insisted I have a surf and turf meal.  He ordered these for me.  I was sure I’d hate them, not being a seafood fan then, but I ended up loving them.

image

*

*

Virginia cured ham!  Is there any finer ham on the planet?

image

*

*

Here’s one blogger’s take on a gratin recipe, using Virginia ingredients.  Doesn’t it look so tasty?

A spin on this recipe: Summer Squash Gratin

Here’s something you can get if you visit the Virginia Aquarium.  They don’t hold back there!

Virginia grown veggies – colorful!

I wish I’d had this biscuit recipe before Easter so I could have made them for our dinner.

Seems Virginia is know for nuts, too.  Smile

image

*

*

You knew I wouldn’t leave that sweet tooth unattended!

*

*

Here’s a sweet sample you can find at the Taste of Arlington.  Save me a plate!

I love Virginia.  I want to live there.  Perfect blend of north and south, elegant and country at the same time.  And the Blue Ridge Mountains are so beautiful, I want them in my view all the time.  We spent a few days there a few years ago, and I actually cried when we left.  It felt like leaving home.  Maybe one day I’ll get to go back.  Smile

Tuesday Travels

Back on the East Coast this week.  Smile

A Taste of Maryland Deluxe Gift Package even has coffee, tea, and cookies!  I want the little crab plushie toy too, how cute is that?!

image

Here’s an entire book dedicated to historical Maryland cuisine and restaurants.  How fun would this be to have on a tour of the state?  “This combination travel guide/cookbook features more than 75 restaurants, many of them time-honored establishments located in historic buildings.”

image

Even Maryland wildlife has a cuisine, you know!  Winking smile  Couldn’t resist the bird picture.

image

I saw this and my mouth just watered.  I know what I’m making when I’m finally on the maintenance phase of Atkins!

Aunt Phil’s Italian Crab Sauce

image

SpongeBob is jealous.  Very jealous.  Mr Crab is apoplectic.  Squidward is … Squidward.

Colossal Crab Cakes

image

Doesn’t this look like a nummy, refreshing summery type of salad?

Mediterranean Crab and Bow Tie Pasta Salad

image

Oh I bet this goes down great with some chips!  And a tall frosty glass of pop.  Yum!

Maryland Steamed Shrimp Salad Sandwich

image

Grab the Trisquits!  Here I come!  Ooh, I wonder if El Ranchero tortilla chips would go good with this?  (Best tortilla chips EVER, just so you know.)

Maryland Crab Dip

image

Another state that has a wine country!  This is so cool!  I had no idea there were so many US states that grew wine grapes until I started doing these travel posts.

Maryland Wine Country!

image

You didn’t think I’d forget dessert, did you?  Oh no.  Never.  Open-mouthed smile  By the way, get your own Smith Island Cake, this one’s mine!

I can see a lighthouse waaaaay down the coastline there.

image
I wonder if it’s Autumn.  Looks like Autumn to me.  What do you think?  Winking smile

image
The city may not be the most pristine, but check out that rainbow!

image
Bear?  In New Jersey?  For real?!

image
The power of nature, man’s ingenuity, combined for your viewing pleasure.

image
Ringwood Manor, considered to be the most haunted place in New Jersey.  As far as houses go, this looks like an awesome place to live.  And if I lived there, it wouldn’t be haunted anymore.  Smile

image
The Spy House, Port Monmouth, NJ also considered to be one of the most haunted places in NJ.

Meet Charles Cullen
image
Charles Cullen is considered to be the worst serial killer in NJ history.  He was a nurse, and killed as many as 45 patients.  Okay, hospitals were creepy enough, thank you!  *shudder*  It took 15 years for him to be caught.  You know, hospitals are probably the best place for a serial killer.  Patients who are ill and can’t really fight back would be easy prey.

Want more info on New Jersey?  You can click here, or any of the pictures – all have linky love.  Smile

Thanks Marta for all your terrific thoughts!
