Socializing

Infographic: Google+ vs. Facebook | News & Opinion | PCMag.com.

Soooo, Google+ is a social network?  That’s what that little +1 graphic thingy is about?  Interesting.  The linked article above has a nice graphic showing the differences between Google+ and Facebook.

I guess this means the marriage between Google and Facebook is off?

I have come to realize that I don’t want to get in on the ground floor of anything anymore.  I can’t even decide if I want to upgrade my beloved Firefox to the new V5.  Version 4 was really buggy and hinky so I didn’t assimilate, and now 5 is out and I’m thinking I just got 3.6 how I like it, I don’t want to go through the hassle of relearning everything.  Yet.  I’ll wait to make sure the bugs are worked out.  Heh, by that time V6 will probably be out!  I love technology but man, sometimes companies seem in such a rush to get things out that they don’t make sure everything works properly first.  Frankly, I don’t want to be an unpaid beta tester just because some place is in a rush.  One tech giant comes to mind – who shall remain nameless – seems to do this on a rather frequent basis.  It’s annoying, but I think they might have learned a very valuable lesson last time they did that.  The backlash was almost fun to watch.  Smile  And in the end, we got a better product for it.  That’s what the free market is all about.  Score!

Have you seen the new Google search thing?

What do you love?

It’s pretty cool – brings up search results in a magazine format.  Click it and see!  Type in something you love!

Will you be joining Google+?  Have you already?  Thoughts?

Powerless

imageAgain!

For the 2nd time in less than 3 weeks, we were without power.  A storm blew through here early in the morning yesterday and left a lot of debris in its wake.  There were branches and leaves all over the parking lot, and later after Darc got home and we went out to get something to eat, we saw lots of tree limbs on the ground.  We even saw an entire (huge) tree that was uprooted, and someone’s truck that was buckled by a tree falling on it!  We were lucky, I think.  There was a lot of damage around us, and we escaped unscathed.  Our power was out all day and only came on just before Darc got home, while it was out in other areas around us, including the businesses nearby.

Of course, just because the power came back on didn’t mean the Internet connection came back online, oh no!  That remained out for a few more hours.  So, I could play tons of Freecell and Spider Solitaire, but couldn’t get to my Reader.  Such is life!  LOL

Thankfully the power wasn’t out as long as it was last time either.

So no real housework for me yesterday!  Ha!  No washing machine and no vacuum, wheeeee!  Of course, that means I have to catch up today so I guess it balances itself out.

This Week’s Thoughts

12 Most Beautiful Lakes in the World

via 12 Most Beautiful Lakes in the World.

image

How’s that for a tease?  Isn’t it stunning?

I’ve been to one of the lakes on the list, and if I ever get bitten by the travel bug, I know where I want to go.  I love beautiful places and these are some of the loveliest.

U.S. Neighborhoods with the Biggest Houses

via U.S. Neighborhoods with the Biggest Houses.

image

Guess where I live?!  Yeah, it isn’t in any of these neighborhoods!  LOL

I kind of like this house but it’s not in the #1 neighborhood.  And the #1 neighborhood isn’t where you think it is, I bet!

Lakefront Mansion Price Cut by $25 Million

via Lakefront Mansion Price Cut by $25 Million.

So, if you found any spare change in the couch cushions, maybe you could spring for this beauty now that it’s been marked down.

Goodness.  If 25M is what was cut, can you imagine what the original asking price was?  Sheesh!

The Most Dangerous Cities in America

via The Most Dangerous Cities in America.

image

You might not recognize that city pictured but I bet my husband does.  He and I have both been through there at one time or another.  (but not together) Briefly.  With reason.  It’s not in IL either.

No, Chicago isn’t on this list, but another IL city is!

World’s Best Ruins

via World’s Best Ruins.

image

Ruins often have a beauty of their own and Petra is one that captures my imagination for some reason.  There are lots of other places on the list, including one in America!  I just might get to that one some day.

Got Paraprosdokian?

Paraprosdokian (noun): Figure of speech in which the latter part of a sentence or phrase is surprising or unexpected

…frequently used in a humorous situation.

"I’ve had a perfectly wonderful evening… but this wasn’t it." —Groucho Marx

"If all the girls who attended the Yale prom were laid end to end, I wouldn’t be a bit surprised." — Dorothy Parker

"I like going to the park and watching the children run around because they don’t know I’m using blanks."
Emo Phillips

These were some of my favorites.  Check out the rest, there’s lots more!  Open-mouthed smile

This Week’s Thoughts

image

Did you see that moon the other night? I think it was Tuesday. It was all hazy here, and the moon was sitting pretty low on the horizon to the east.  I tried to grab a picture of it with my phone.   I need a telescope.  Okay, maybe need is too strong a word.  I want a telescope.

*****

After nearly a week of playing around with my Tablet, I can definitively say I love it.  I love it!  I’ve been reading up a storm on it, and downloading apps for it, just like a phone.  One thing I discovered which I thought was cool – I was going to get a stylus for it but I found I just need a fingernail.  No smeary fingerprints!  Built-in styluses!  Woo!  Open-mouthed smile

*****

No longer the “Terminator,” or the “Governator,” now … the “Fornicator.”  *facepalm*  Oy vey Maria, what a mess!

*****

The PlayStation Network is down again?  What in the world are they doing over at Sony?

*****

What’s this about Android phones?  Privacy concerns?  Hacking?  Yikes!  No one is safe anywhere!  No banking on the phone!  Whatever else you do with your phone, don’t do banking!  However, ClearCheckbook.com has an app where you don’t connect to a bank but you can still keep track of your money, if you need to check that info while you’re out and about.  It’s pretty cool.

*****

My husband picked himself up some shoes on the way home from work.  He handed me his wallet when he got home and said, “Go shopping!  You deserve some new shoes too!”

And I realized that I probably haven’t been inside a regular non-discount shoe store other than Payless since 1980-something.  I’m a little overwhelmed.  And unnerved that I’m a little overwhelmed.  And not the least bit interested in going to the mall.  *shudder*  Guess I’m going to Shoebuy!  Or maybe Zappos.  What I really want is something like a “flatform.”  At real-people prices.  And free shipping.  Smile  No, I’m not picky at all!  Why do you ask?

This Week’s Thoughts

America’s Prettiest Towns. These would make a great summer driving tour.  Remember when people used to do that sort of thing?
Animal Kingdom likely to run in Preakness. Did you see the race?  I saw the race!  I was able to stream it on the web!  It was a great race, you should have seen Animal Kingdom come from behind to win.
13 Beauty Lessons Mom Was Right About. Somebody’s mom, I’m sure.  Smile  We can all use a tip or 2, right?
The Best and Worst Kitchen Appliances. I love kitchen gadgets and appliances.  But no matter what, my dream freezer is still an upright.  Ahh, someday!

The Army Corps of Engineers disguised various aircraft plants along the West Coast

via After Pearl Harbor.

I stumbled on these a couple of years ago, and by chance found them again recently.  These are amazing photos, not just because they’re cool, but also for what our engineers were able to accomplish.  Stunning!
Commodore USA. Remember the Commodore 64?  It’s baaaaa-aaaack!
The 5 Biggest Mistakes Used Car Buyers Make. Are you in the market for a newer used car?  Here are some helpful tips we all could use, I’m sure.  I know car buying is a science at which I fail , so any help is welcome.
Cool Video: 9 Months = 2 Minutes. This is a really fun video.  I wish a real pregnancy lasted only 2 minutes!  LOL  Labor too!

Praying for those along the Mississippi River.  I remember when it flooded back in ‘93, only I’m hearing that this time is the worst it’s been since something like 1937.  Memphis is under water y’all, and Texas needs water to put out the wildfires.  Our southern heartland is hurting.  Don’t forget they’re trying to recover from all those tornadoes down in Alabama and surrounding states a couple of weeks ago, too.  So I’m praying for our south.  Join me!
